  • Stress
  • Pollution

Are You At Risk?

Traction alopecia can affect men and women of all races. Certain races especially Africans are more prone to getting traction alopecia. The epidemiological studies have shown that traction alopecia is more prevalent in the people of African descent because of their traditions of putting hair in dreadlocks or braids.

Other cultures that experience traction alopecia in India include Sikh men and women who wear their hair in tight knots underneath the turban. In addition, gymnasts, military personnel, Caucasian ballerina wearing a tight bun for years are more prone to developing traction alopecia

How long does it take for the traction alopecia to be resolved?

It is often resolved within 3 to 6 months if it is caught and treated early. In severe cases, it can take as long as 1 year for a damaged scalp to regrow hair. When hair follicles are badly traumatized over a long period and scar tissue has formed , hair will not grow back by itself

What home care should people take to prevent further hair loss and what should be avoided ?
  1. Avoid combing hair while wet.
  2. Avoid excessive heat while styling.
  3. Wear loose comfortable hairstyle.
  4. Cut the bad habits, Stress can’t always be mitigated, but bad habits can't be. Many of the things you do routinely might be contributing to your hair loss.
  5. Consider these big ones, Not shampooing enough, but also shampooing too often. (Twice a week should suffice, with a specialized shampoo for thinning hair). Rinse and condition daily. Though Poor diet can also contribute to hair loss, You should consume a diet rich in oils, protein, and nutrients to nourish your body and scalp.
  6. Lastly, as mentioned in the previous tip, smoking and alcohol both aggravate hair loss. While they might seem to calm stress, they in fact restrict the blood vessels, thus reducing circulation and blood flow to the follicles
